Promoting Active Participation of Children and Youth

3. Challenging Conditions of Service : Often in contexts of crisis, post-crisis and fragility, teachers are working under difficult conditions: teaching large numbers of students in a single classroom, teaching multiple subjects with little training or experience and/or lacking essential teaching and learning materials. Outside the classroom teachers also face multiple competing demands on their time and attention. These challenging conditions of work hamper teachers' ability to ensure full participation of children and youth in creating healing classrooms. 4. Un-Participatory School Dynamics: In many schools, teachers themselves are not involved in decision-making. There, decisions are made at higher levels, by the principals or other school administrators, by the education and youth and livelihoods program officers, and/or by others. Final decisions are communicated to teachers along with instructions of any subsequent actions required of them. In such situations it is highly unlikely that teachers will think about the need and the benefits of engaging students in any decision-making, even about classroom-level issues, such as class rules, class monitors or preferred sports and games during physical education lessons.

Questions for Reflection/Discussion:

In your context, how do teachers, principals/head teachers, other school administrators, education officers, etc. involve (or neglect to involve) students in decision-making or in issues of relevance to their lives? What are the key factors contributing to this situation? In what ways can children and youth become more involved in decisions and discussions related to education and other issues that relate to their lives? What sort of training or preparation might the teachers need to enable them to do this?
