Healing Classrooms and Child-Friendly Schools

In practical terms, a Healing Classroom calls for these six components:

  • A safe learning environment oriented to well-being and to active learning

  • Teaching and classroom management methods that promote well-being

  • Positive and supportive communication with children and youth

  • Emphasis on reaching all learners – diversified teaching and communication styles

  • Creative, sports and recreational activities

  • Active participation of children, youth and other community members in decision-making in school and in the community

Questions for Reflection/Discussion:

How are these components similar to the ones you listed? How are they different? Do all of your staff understand the concept Healing Classroom in the same way? If not, where do understandings differ? How do these differences affect program implementation?
