Case Study: Creating Healing Schools in the Earthquake-Affected Areas of Pakistan

Because of the timing of the earthquake early on a school-day morning, many children who survived saw classmates crushed and killed or injured in the quake. Children were understandably hesitant about returning to brick-built schools and in many settings were actually more comfortable in the makeshift tents that were provided.

The RISE project has a strong emphasis on SMC/PTA development, and the Community Development team working on the PTA support activities felt that it was important to ensure that PTA members were made aware of their potential roles in working with teachers and head teachers to create, monitor and sustain healing schools.
