Gender Dynamics

Supply and Demand

Although boys are disadvantaged in some situations, in contexts of crisis, post-crisis and state fragility it is girls who are most often more disadvantaged in both the supply and demand of education.

Reflection/Discussion:

What do you see as some of the most significant gender issues in education in your context?

Activity:

Organize your thoughts and list them on paper as either supply or demand factors.

For facilitators:

Lead a group discussion about the relationships between gender and supply and demand of education in your context. In what ways (if any) are supply and demand related?

Education, especially literacy and numeracy, is precisely what girls need during and after armed conflict. Education can help prepare adolescent girls for the new roles and responsibilities that they are often obliged to take on in conflict situations.
